Summer vacation season is here and whether you’re heading to the lake, flying abroad, or taking a road trip across Alberta, the last thing you want is to come home to a plumbing disaster.
At Academy Mechanical Services Inc., we’ve seen firsthand how small oversights can turn into costly headaches while homeowners are away. That’s why we’ve put together this easy plumbing checklist to help you leave your home worry-free.
Shut Off the Main Water Valve
If you’re leaving for more than a couple of days, it’s a smart move to turn off your main water supply. This simple step can prevent leaks or burst pipes from causing major water damage while you’re gone. After shutting off the valve, run a faucet to relieve pressure in the line.
Look for Drips and Leaks
Check under sinks, around toilets, and behind your washer and dishwasher. If you spot any leaks, even small ones, take care of them before you go. A slow drip can turn into a flood if left unchecked.

Clear Your Drains
Make sure all your sinks, tubs, and showers are draining properly. A slow drain today could mean a backup tomorrow. Avoid bad smells or clogs by pouring a safe, natural cleaner (like baking soda and vinegar) down the drains before you leave.
Turn Off Your Water Heater or Set it to Vacation Mode
Save energy while you’re away! Most water heaters have a “vacation” or “low” setting that keeps the pilot light on but avoids heating water you won’t be using. If you’re shutting off your main water, your heater should be turned off too.
Test Your Sump Pump
If your home has a sump pump, test it before you leave. Pour a bucket of water into the sump pit and make sure it kicks on and drains properly. Summer storms in Edmonton can hit fast and you want your pump ready.

Have a Trusted Friend or Neighbor Check In
Ask someone you trust to check in every few days — not just for mail and plants, but to walk through the house and look for any signs of water issues. Leave them with our contact info in case something goes wrong – we’re just a call away!
Taking a few minutes to prep your plumbing can save you from serious stress (and money) down the line. If you’re unsure about anything or would like a professional to give your plumbing system a once-over before you leave, give Academy Mechanical a call. We’re here to help keep your home safe while you enjoy your summer getaway.
